Infertility Q&A

What is infertility?

Infertility is the inability to get pregnant after 12 months of trying, or after six months of trying in women 35 and older. You may also have infertility if you can get pregnant, but are unable to carry a baby to term.

Infertility is common, affecting about 10% of women of childbearing age in the United States. However, infertility isn’t just a women’s problem. Men also have health issues that hinder conception.

When struggling with infertility, both partners benefit from a thorough evaluation.

What causes infertility in women?

Problems with ovulation and structural abnormalities of the reproductive organs are the most common causes of infertility in women.

Ovulation problems

Ovulation occurs when your ovary releases an egg. If you don’t ovulate you can’t get pregnant. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a gynecologic condition that affects ovulation and is one of the most common causes of infertility in women.

Structural abnormalities

Structural abnormalities may also affect your ability to get or stay pregnant.

Endometriosis is a gynecologic condition in which endometrial-like tissue grows outside the uterus. This displaced tissue causes inflammation and scarring that might block the fallopian tube, preventing fertilization of the egg by sperm.

Uterine fibroids may affect the implantation of the egg into the uterus after fertilization.

What happens during an infertility consultation?

You can expect a professional and comprehensive evaluation when you visit OB/GYN Associates of Conroe for an infertility consultation. Dr. Roberts specializes in infertility and performs a thorough history and physical to find the underlying cause of your condition.

He reviews your medical, gynecologic, sexual, and family history and does a physical and pelvic exam. Dr. Roberts orders diagnostic tests such as blood work, urinalysis, and ultrasound.

What are some of the treatments for infertility?

Dr. Roberts customizes your infertility treatment plan based on the underlying cause. Treatment might include:

Ovulation induction

If ovulation problems like PCOS are the cause of your infertility, Dr. Roberts may prescribe ovulation induction medication.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

During IUI, Dr. Roberts inserts specially prepared semen into your uterus during ovulation. Dr. Roberts also offers donor insemination.

Laser laparoscopy

Dr. Roberts may perform laser laparoscopy to diagnose and treat endometriosis. During this minimally invasive procedure, he uses a laparoscope ― thin flexible tube with a light and camere — to evaluate your reproductive organs. He then uses laser energy to ablate the endometrial growth.
